8 Tips to Keep your Aircon from Overworking

In Singapore, aircon usage is a must even in the daytime. But don’t you think that using your aircon at full blower speed might be drinking up your electricity bill? And if you are lucky, it may also lead to overworking of the appliance itself. Take a look at these some practical tips of how to keep your beloved aircon unit from overworking:

1) Keep it clean: Clean the filters

Every month, check and replace your air conditioning filters if necessary. They can get dirty quite quickly and reduce the unit’s efficiency by 5-10%.  If your air conditioner is looking a bit dusty, it may be a good idea to give it a thorough clean-up. This will help protect your system from overheating and breakdowns.

2) Keep it dry: Be mindful of water leaks and condensation

Water leaks through the unit drip into the compressor and causes corrosion which leads to expensive repairs or an early replacement. It’s also important to keep areas near your air conditioning unit dry. When the unit is humid, water will drip down onto it and cause corrosion or rusting of internal components.

3) Keep it safe: Never use your aircon for heating

It wasn’t designed to do this and can lead to very expensive repairs. If you need heat, just switch on your heater instead.

Another tip: Unplug the unit before cleaning or servicing. Not doing this can result in an electric shock or even death! It could also cause costly damage to the internal components if done incorrectly.

4) Keep it quiet: Keep the unit at least a meter away from walls and other obstructions

This is a common problem in too many homes and offices! The aircon compressor needs to have enough space to let hot air circulate around it so it can continue operating efficiently. If you notice that your home or office doesn’t have enough room, consider replacing your system with a more modern Ducted Reverse Cycled System which uses pipework instead of freon-filled pipes to distribute cool air throughout your house or building.

5) Keep it efficient: If your unit has a filter, make sure it’s clean every month before replacing

A dirty air filter reduces airflow and can lead to costly repairs down the line. If you have a single-hose unit without a filter, use an incense stick or matchstick to check for any sign of black soot buildup. If there are any dark spots on the incense, it’s time for some cleaning!

Instructional tip: Simply mix water with detergent in a small container and spray onto the surface of the unit that needs cleaning. Leave this to sit for about 30 minutes then wipe away gently with a soft cloth or sponge. You may need to repeat this a few times to completely remove the grime.

6) Keep it organic: Add some organic air purifiers

This is an optional thing but you might want to consider putting in a few of these around your home or office if you have any pets inside. Or even just around the ventilation systems. These plants will help absorb bad odors from things like cooking, smoking, dirty litter boxes, and more! They’re not expensive and worth a try if you have pets or smokers indoors.

7) Keep it cool: Get a better view

If you have your unit installed outside your house or office, then chances are you can’t see it from inside. This means that you could be missing out on a great view! It’s always worth considering installing glass panels to where the air conditioning unit is so you can enjoy those views without sacrificing comfort. They come in many different styles and finishes so there will definitely be something for everyone.

8) Keep it natural: Go green by installing solar panels

By now you should have noticed how important it is to keep those roofs well painted so they don’t absorb the heat from the units. Solar panels are a great way of doing this without needing to attach anything to your walls or roof. Simply install them on top of that hot tin roof and there you have it. They’re super easy to install yourself but again, just do your research properly beforehand as they do vary quite a bit.

Taking good care of your aircon unit is an important part of making sure it works all year round. It’s pretty easy to learn how to maintain an aircon unit yourself so you can save on your energy bills and also extend the life of your appliance.
